Cameron Olderog, MD, FACEP is a board certified emergency medicine physician and a certified Functional Medicine Practitioner with the Institute of Functional Medicine.
She founded Horizon Functional Medicine to help patients optimize their health through lifestyle modifications to help people live the lives they want to live. She lives on a regenerative farm with her husband and three children in Marshall, Virginia. Because Dr. Olderog trained in a conventional medical school, she understands and can help navigate the complexities of using pharmaceuticals when needed but not overprescribing medications that are unnecessary. Her expertise enables her to help her patients achieve true health.
What is Functional Medicine?
Functional Medicine examines the root cause of disease. It is patient centered and addresses the whole person – not just an isolated set of symptoms. It looks at the complex interactions of environmental, genetic and lifestyle factors in an individual and how those factors influence complex, chronic disease. Functional medicine is medicine the way it should be.
Why Choose Functional Medicine?
Our society is experiencing a sharp increase in chronic diseases including autoimmune diseases, diabetes, heart disease and mental illness. How we are doing things in conventional medicine isn’t working so functional medicine takes a different approach. In functional medicine we examine the roots cause of symptoms or illness to prevent and treat complex and chronic disease. If you are struggling with symptoms that aren’t being explored or treatment that isn’t working for you, Functional Medicine may be the right choice for you.

What does a treatment plan look like?
Functional Medicine treatment focuses on modifiable lifestyle factors and starts with changes in nutrition, movement, stress, sleep and community. Supplements may also be used as well as medications as needed to treat specific conditions. Functional medicine combines both conventional and integrative treatments to personalize a safe and effective treatment plan for each individual patient.
Do you accept insurance?
We do not accept insurance as it limits the treatment options available to our patients. We do accept HSA and FSA cards and can generate a bill for you to submit to your insurance company.
We do not participate with Medicare, nor do we bill Medicare for any services rendered.
Are you a Primary Care Physician?
We recommend you have a separate primary care physician. Dr. Cameron Olderog offers functional medicine consultation only and does not function as your primary care physician. You must have a primary care physician for yearly physicals, wellness visits and for after hours or urgent care purposes. We do not respond to urgent requests of any sort, including messages or phone calls, you must have a primary care doctor for this purpose.

Who is Horizon Patient?
Anybody who wants to take control of their own health! Patients vary in complexity and health goals. We help people with complex chronic disease such as autoimmune disease, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, heart disease, arthritis, thyroid disease, depression and anxiety (to name a few) to approach their disease with the goal of healing from the inside out. Many patients are able to tailor back their medications in this instance. We collaborate with the patient’s primary care physician and specialists before discontinuing medications.
We also assist patients who are otherwise healthy, but just “don’t feel right”. These patients may have seen multiple doctors, and their labs are all normal, however they are still plagued with fatigue, insomnia, mood disorders, brain fog etc. We use our advanced diagnostic testing to get to the underlying cause of these issues.
